South Burnett Residents – It’s time to get Prepared!

Back

Although Tropical Cyclone Kirrily is expected to impact northern Queensland, there is always a chance that a low could form and track south towards our region.

The Local Disaster Management Group and Council are currently taking precautions around early preparedness and we are requesting the community to also be prepared. It's important to remain vigilant and be prepared for emergency situations such as cyclones, severe storms, fire and floods that may occur in our region.

Cr Potter, Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group wishes to remind residents to be prepared, have an emergency kit, do not drive in floodwater, follow messaging from the Bureau and keep up to date with Council’s disaster dashboard for road closures and locations of any activated evacuation centres.

The South Burnett Disaster Dashboard is the place to go for all current information regarding the event. With live links to QFES, BoM, QLD Traffic and Ergon together with active evacuation centres should they be required, this page is your single point of truth!

South Burnett, it’s time to GET READY!

We are asking residents to think about how extreme weather could impact your life, make a plan to stay safe and pack supplies so you don’t get caught out. For ideas on what to pack in your emergency kit view https://www.getready.qld.gov.au/emergencykit.

Think about packing:

• Long-life food and toiletries in case you can’t get to the shops.
• Drinking water in case the water supply stops working.
• Batteries, a torch and radio in case the power goes out.
These are the basics, but also consider what other items your family might use if you had to stay at home for multiple days.
There are other things you can do to be ready for extreme weather:
• Clean-up – Check around the house and yard and make sure your home will hold up against the elements.
• Sign-up – Subscribe to mobile weather notifications from the Bureau of Meteorology or Council’s Disaster Dashboard so you’re informed and can act quickly.
• Connect – Know your neighbours and connect with your community.
• Get covered – Check your insurance to make sure your property can be fixed or replaced if it’s damaged.

Get Ready Queensland has useful information and tips on their website, so be sure to visit www.getready.qld.gov.au.

Our weather can change quickly and be unforgiving. Here in Queensland driving into floodwater is the number one cause of flood-related deaths. Cars are designed to keep us safe on the road but once you hit water, it becomes a completely different story. It doesn't matter what car you drive, or how good you are at driving - as soon as you enter floodwater, your car can’t protect you.
