Bunya Mountains Community Resilience & Preparedness Day

Back

The Bunya Mountains Disaster Management Group will be holding a Community Resilience and Preparedness Day on Saturday 24 April 2021,

when the Local Disaster Management Sub-Plan will be launched following final review from Bunya Mountains Community Association Inc (BMCAI).

From 9:30am-10:30am, join a detailed run through of the sub-plan. From 11am-2pm, join a family fun day, with emergency service vehicles, handouts promoting Council's disaster dashboard, and evacuation preparedness for community members.  All community members and visitors to the Bunyas are welcome.

The South Burnett and Western Downs region is vulnerable to extreme weather including fire risk. Both councils have worked together to develop a strategic approach to minimise that risk, as well as developing a local area emergency plan for an identified vulnerable area such as the Bunya Mountains.

Following the devastating bushfires in 2019/2020, which included a fire at the base of the Bunya Mountains, Bunya Mountains Community Association Inc (BMCAI), in collaboration with the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade (BMRFB), sought advice from Western Downs Regional Council (WDRC), South Burnett Regional Council (SBRC) and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) regarding plans for the Bunya Mountains, should the community be threatened by bushfire or disaster again.

Representatives from WDRC and SBRC Local Disaster Management Committees, QFES, BMRFB, Bunya Mountains Queensland Parks & Wildlife and BMCAI discussed the possible scenarios, current resources, logistics and difficult terrain. The outcome was to create and implement a Local Disaster Management Sub-Plan for the Bunya Mountains community.

SBRC received a grant through the Queensland Bushfire - Category C - Flexible Funding Grants Program to assist with preparation, implementation and community education for the Bunya Mountains community.

The project included consultation and engagement in development of the plans, and preparedness engagement activities for the Bunya Mountains community. It also enabled the purchase of necessary resources, including a generator for the Bunya Mountains Rural Fire Brigade.

The Local Disaster Management Sub-Plan forms part of Council's Local Disaster Management Plans.

The event flyer is available via Council’s website.
