South Burnett Libraries inspiring young readers through the Summer Reading Club

Back

South Burnett Libraries’ Summer Reading Club is inspiring young readers after another successful programme came to an end on 31 January 2021.

The programme aims to encourage a love of reading and continued literacy development in children and young people during the summer holidays.

Response in each South Burnett library was positive with children eager to begin completing the Summer Reading Club challenges.

Children collected a challenge sheet and other goodies during the school holidays for their chance to win a prize at the end of the programme. Examples of challenges included ‘reading aloud to a friend or your family’ or ‘snuggling up and reading a book in bed’.

Kingaroy Library Regional Librarian Danielle Mengel said this year the focus was more on the enjoyment of reading, rather than how many books were read.

Ms Mengel said, “South Burnett Libraries want to let kids know that reading can be lots of fun - whether it’s a book, magazine or graphic novel.”

“COVID-19 impacted the delivery of some of the programme, but we still had very active community engagement.”

“Top children’s authors this year included Ahn Do, David Walliams and Aaron Blabey, who capture the imagination of young readers through their humour,” said Ms Mengel.

This programme, along with others hosted by the library, provides community members opportunities to connect with the free resources available at their local branch.

The Summer Reading Club has been running at South Burnett Libraries in conjunction with the State Library of Queensland for almost a decade.
