South Burnett Regional Council Mayor, Cr Brett Otto urges the South Burnett community to step up and #supportsmall business!
May is the month to show your support for Queensland's small businesses. Shop locally and show how you support small business on social media with #supportsmall.
Mayor Otto said, “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way many of our local small businesses now operate. We all need to do our bit to help the business community stay open, recover and support local jobs.”
The #supportsmall initiative was developed by Chamber of Commerce & Industry Queensland and supported by the Queensland Government for Small Business Month (May). Council has supported this initiative through promotion of the campaign in the weekly Business South Burnett e-newsletter and encouraging use of counter stands and #supportsmall by businesses in region.
Businesses can become involved by simply posting business activity to social media using #supportsmall. The counter sign can be easily downloaded for use in store and a link for this is included in the Business South Burnett e-newsletter, BEAP BEAP.
“You can help #supportsmall by shopping at your local shopping centre, buying takeaway, calling into your corner store or buying gifts locally,” Mayor Otto said.
Council continues to #supportsmall through the local preference clause included in Council’s Procurement Policy. Council provides local industry with a fair and reasonable opportunity to tender for Council business by offering a higher price margin for local business using the following guideline for acceptable price variances:
- 10% for goods and services under $50,000
- 5% for goods and services over $50,000 up to $200,000
Mayor Otto explained, “Local preference is not simply a price benefit but rather an assessable measurement that can be utilised in recognition of the physical presence of the supplier within the South Burnett by means of consideration to the social and economic benefits that local business provides the region.”
“Council proposes to launch a Local Marketplace which will provide local business and industry more opportunities to supply Council with goods and services that are non-contracted, ad-hoc supply arrangements such as catering, stationery, parts, tools & equipment, clothing & uniforms and numerous other categories of supply.”
