Big Bag Recovery

Council is proud to partner with Big Bag Recovery. By dropping off your bulk bags at our collection points (Kingaroy, Nanango, Wondai, Murgon and Kumbia), you’re contributing to a program that’s created over 67 circular economy jobs and diverted over 6.6 million kg of bulk bags from landfill.

Big Bag Recovery is the Australian Government Accredited Product Stewardship scheme for plastic bags over 15kg/l of contents (sacks and bulk bags). The program only includes recyclable bags that are woven polypropylene (wPP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE). The program allows for two sizes: sacks and bulk bags.

Cartridges 4 Planet Ark

Cartridges 4 PlanetArkis a national recycling program that allows you to recycle your used or empty laser and inkjet cartridges. Printer cartridges cannot be recycled in your kerbside recycling bin. Cartridges are made up of a complex mix of materials that can be turned into new products, including plastics, metal, inks and toners. When they are disposed of into landfill, these resources are lost.

Your used or empty laser and inkjet cartridges can be dropped off atparticipating shops such as Harvey Norman. All inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges and toner bottles are accepted. This includes cartridges used in printers, photocopiers, and fax machines.

You can also bring the printer cartridges to some of the Council’s Customer Contact centres. Please enquire before disposal.

Container Exchange program

South Burnett Regional Council has installed 36 container exchange cages to bins across our region as part of the Containers for Change movement. These cages have been supplied by the Container Exchange program (COEX) at no cost to Council. The only cost will be the installation of the cages to the existing bins.

This will allow people to leave their eligible drink containers in a convenient and accessible cage, that would have otherwise ended up as litter and landfill. These can then be collected by another person or a community group who can exchange it for the 10-cent refund.

The Containers for Change scheme provides participants with a 10c refund for each eligible container returned. Container for Change facilities are located at 13 Kingaroy Street, Kingaroy and Stan Mickelo Drive, Cherbourg. There is also Bag Drop containers located at Blackbutt.

This initiative aims to encourage the community to recycle therefore reducing waste in our Council landfills.

Mobile Muster

MobileMuster is the Australian mobile phone industry's official product stewardship program. It's a free mobile phone recycling program that accepts all brands and types of mobile phones, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories.

Mobile phone components are not biodegradable, so they won't break down in landfill. On top of that, mobiles contain some substances that can potentially harm the environment if not disposed of correctly.

Over 90% of the materials used in a mobile are recyclable and can be reused, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions, saving energy, protecting our environment and conserving scarce natural resources.

How to Recycle

MobileMuster works with partners like mobile phone retailers, local Councils and Australia Post to collect phones from the public. Residents are encouraged to recycle their old phones, batteries, chargers and accessories by:

  • Dropping off your mobile phone at any Council Customer Service Centre in the designated receptacle provided
  • Finding another drop-off point in your area
  • Posting your mobile phones, batteries, chargers and accessories to MobileMuster. This can be posted for FREE by downloading and printing the reply-paid label and affixing to your package prior to posting

Each mobile received is dismantled and recycled, and any data left on the handset is destroyed through the recycling process.
