Education Programs and Resources & Disaster Management

The South Burnett Disaster Management team work closely with a number of organisations including Queensland Fire Department (QFD), State Emergency Service (SES), Queensland Police Service (QPS), Get Ready Queensland and the Red Cross. These groups are able to provide additional disaster-related resources and often accompany us to events and on educational visits.

See below for a range of activities and resources that South Burnett Council can provide:

Play the Snakes and Ladders game to make your way home to safety by avoiding flooded roads, broken power lines, and taking steps to prepare your home and pets during a disaster.

Need to agree to care instructions:

  • No shoes on the map – socks or soft, clean footwear are preferred. If someone is unable to remove their shoes due to injury, accessibility, or other vulnerabilities, this is allowed, just take extra care to keep the map clean.
  • No food or drinks on the mat – spills can permanently stain the fabric.
  • Use on a hard, flat surface – avoid grass, gravel or uneven flooring that may snag the fabric.
  • Spot clean with water only – use a damp, soft cloth or sponge.
  • Do not use hard cleaning chemicals – they can damage the fabric and fade the print.
  • Avoid sharp objects – pens, scissors, or pins can puncture or tear the fabric.

Prepare your School

Crawford-state-school.jpg

The Queensland Department of Education is an important pillar within the South Burnett community and for significant periods has responsibility for our most valuable and vulnerable resource - our children.

They have allocated significant resources to ensure the safety and security of students, staff and other stakeholders engaged within educational precincts.

Useful information on how the Department is organised and resourced to prepare and respond to disaster events can be found on the Department of Education website

Year 5 school presentation

South Burnett is committed to building resilience within our community, particularly through disaster preparedness education.

The Year 5 geography curriculum includes a unit on preparing, planning and responding to the different types of hazards and disasters that could potentially affect Queensland. To assist teachers and students with this important area of study, members of Council's Disaster Management team can deliver a complimentary one hour presentation to Year 5 students in schools across the region.

This presentation is interactive and empowering, with a strong focus on the role students can play in helping their families and community to plan and prepare for disasters and to encourage further conversations and planning at home, students are given additional resources to share with their family.

School presentations can be organised through South Burnett's Disaster Management Team. Email info@sbrc.qld.gov.au as early as possible to discuss your school's needs.
