Right to Information

The Right to Information Act 2009 (RTI Act) and the Information Privacy Act 2009 (IP Act) aims to make more information available, provide equal access to information across all sectors of the community, and provide appropriate protection for individuals' privacy.

The right to information gives you the right to access and amend information held by public sector agencies in Queensland, unless there is a good reason for it not to be provided.  You have a right to access your personal information held by government under the Information Privacy Act 2009.  You have a right to access personal and non-personal information held by government under the Right to Information Act 2009.

This legislation replaces the former Freedom of Information Act 1992 (FOI).

Right to Information is the Queensland Government's approach to giving the community greater access to information. Applicants are encouraged to contact Council’s Governance Branch to see whether the information being requested can be released by Council's administrative processes prior to making an application under the RTI Act.

How do I access information?

  • Payment of the RTI fee must be paid at time of application (if applicable), processing and access charges may also apply.
  • All RTI applications should provide sufficient information to allow the identification of the documents you are seeking
  • Provide an address for notices of the Act to be sent to the applicant

Administrative Access Scheme

Council seeks to proactively release information informally where it can via the Administrative Access Scheme and the information you are seeking may be already accessible through this process. Contact Council to find out more information.
