Be Prepared

Natural disasters can cause major disruptions to essential services. So it's important to be prepared.

Prepare your home

The best time to prepare your home is before storm, cyclone and bushfire season. Taking steps now to secure and protect your property can improve the safety of your home.

Print out a 'Prepare Your Home' fact sheet.

Household Emergency Kit

An emergency kit should contain essential items to help you and your household survive for three days without outside contact or help.

What to keep in an emergency kit

  • Food and water
  • Medical and sanitation supplies
  • Lighting
  • Mobile phone
  • Clothing, footwear and bedding
  • Tools and supplies
  • Important documents
  • Pet supplies

Print a household emergency kit checklist and keep in a handy place.

Emergency Plan

Are you prepared for an emergency?

'Be Prepared' so that during an emergency you know:

  • what to do
  • where to go
  • how to keep in touch with your family and friends
  • how to contact emergency services

You should prepare the plan with everyone in your household. Make sure they all understand the risks and how to stay safe in an emergency.

Know your neighbours

  • Disasters rarely (if ever) only impact one house in a neighbourhood.
  • By knowing your neighbours and being aware of their circumstances, you may be able to identify who might need additional assistance or who may be able to help you.
  • Your family and your household will be much safer if you share your knowledge with your neighbours and work together to have a safer community.

Do your kids feel safe?

Volunteer to assist others

Consider joining a community emergency service organisation like the State Emergency Service (SES) to help your community prepare for and respond to natural disasters.

Disaster readiness checklist

  • The Disaster Readiness Index (on the Volunteering Queensland website) is a checklist which focuses on things you need to know, actions you should be taking and your understanding of your environment before and after a disaster event.
  • Red Cross Emergency REDiPlan is a four-step easy-to-follow process to prepare your household for an emergency.
