2017 Boxing Day Severe Weather Event 2017 Boxing Day Severe Weather Event

Following the severe weather event that occurred on Boxing Day 2017, Council has been working closely with Human & Social and Economic sub-groups of the South Burnett Local Disaster Recovery Group facilitating a coordinated response to recovery activities to support those communities impacted by the severe weather event over parts of the South Burnett on Boxing Day.

The resilience of our communities was noted with a large percentage of agencies reporting people getting on with the clean-up and repairs independently; however the need for ongoing support for impacted residents was stressed.

Mayor Keith Campbell said “Whilst activation of funding assistance under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) has not been triggered; impacted property owners are encouraged to seek assistance locally from the various support organisations.”

An information kit has been compiled to assist residents find relevant support agencies.

“Community members are sometimes reluctant to ask for help, however it is important that we do not underestimate the human, economic and emotional impacts on residents.  We want to ensure that members of our community who are in need of some form of support are not overlooked.”
