South Burnett Regional Council commends landholders for getting involved in the May Coordinated Baiting Program with participation increasing by 21% compared to the previous program held in 2024.

South Burnett landholders reported an increase in the economic and environmental impact of wild dogs and feral pigs and registrations for the program has showed trends consistent with these reports. The feral pig damage to broadacre crops in impacted areas of the region ranges from $100 to $1000 of damage per hectare, with some reports in the peanut industry advises total losses by the time the crop has reached maturity.

Landholders increase in participation in this Coordinated Baiting Program was a result of the supply of free meat baits. The provision of free meat baits would not be possible without the support of SunPork Group, Kingaroy who provided 2000kgs of meat for the baiting program.

Council will be running another Coordinated Baiting Program in September and encourages landholders to register once dates are released closer to the program. Council encourages all land managers to be actively involved in feral animal control programs including baiting, trapping, shooting and fencing.

Please contact Council’s Natural Resource Management Team for more information on baiting guidelines and other feral animal control techniques on 4189 9100 or email info@sbrc.qld.gov.au.
