South Burnett Regional Council would like to advise the community of the removal of a dying White Cedar tree, located in front of the Blackbutt Slab Hut, along the pedestrian footpath at Les Muller Park in Blackbutt.

A tree assessment concluded that the White Cedar (Melia azedarach) tree is in poor health and dying, evident of infection and insect attack. There is major decay, dead branches and splits in many of the limbs.

The removal of the tree is required to maintain public safety and to ensure the visual appeal of the park. The park will remain open to the public during this time. In order to provide a safe work environment, signage will be in place to advise of the works.

The removal of the tree is scheduled for Wednesday 9 July, between 7am to 12pm, weather permitting.

The replacement tree is a Eumundi Quandong, Elaeocarpus Eumundi, a desired shady street tree for Parks. It has an attractive glossy dense foliage and new bronze growth, small blue fruit, followed by cream scented flowers in early summer. There are several trees of this species already growing in Les Muller Park that are thriving in this location. Council’s Parks department will be responsible for the replanting and ongoing maintenance of the replaced tree, including watering, fertilising, pruning, mulching and crown lifting.

Council apologises in advance for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciates your patience while works are in progress.
