South Burnett Regional Council is celebrating WOW Day, Wednesday 20 May 2026. WOW Day, also known as, Wear Orange Wednesday is a national day of recognition, where Queenslanders and communities across Australia are encouraged to wear orange to show their support and gratitude for the incredible State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

This year makes the 50th anniversary of the Queensland SES, a significant milestone in its history. Please help Council celebrate the incredible contributions of volunteers from all walks of life.

Our SES volunteers generously give their time and energy to assist communities during emergencies, such as floods, storms and cyclones.

WOW Day is an opportunity to celebrate their commitment and say 'thank you' for their invaluable contributions.

Mayor Kathy Duff said “The Queensland State Emergency Service is dedicated to helping the community in times of disaster, responding to thousands of calls for help every year.“

The SES helps communities prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disaster, including:

  • Cyclones and severe storms
  • Floods
  • Earthquakes
  • Landslides

 SES Volunteers also:

  • Conduct search and rescue operations
  • Conduct crime scene/forensics searches
  • Provide community preparedness and safety education
  • Support other emergency service agencies

We are seeking your support for WOW Day to be celebrated in your workplace.  Some ideas are:

  • Dress in your finest orange outfit
  • Share photos and tag @QueenslandState Emergency Service on Facebook or @qldses on Instagram to show your appreciation
  • Host an orange themed morning tea
  • Put up posters in your workplace to celebrate our volunteers
