Purchased by South Burnett Regional Council in 2019, the “Red Ant” sculpture, fashioned from discarded steel and wire, champions the message of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’. Council purchased the sculpture as part of its regional art collection.
Armed with a sense of place, the ‘Red Ant’ has fought to serve and protect its own community with tenacity and zeal and, with a bite far worse than its bark, is noted for its fiery resilience.
The ‘Red Ant’ made its mark within the indigenous Wakka Wakka language too far back for most to remember and more recently, has been allotted space on a map of this ancient landscape ensuring the spirit of ‘Kingaroy’ lives on in all those who share this land.
The purpose of the relocation is to give the artwork more promotion and visibility. The relocation includes an overhead spotlight to highlight the sculpture at nighttime.
These works are proudly funded by the Queensland Government through the Works for Queensland Program. The relocation of the Red Ant is a component of the Community Facilities Upgrade project, which received $1,690,000 in funding from the Queensland Government’s 2024-27 Works for Queensland program.
