Representatives from the South Burnett Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) and Local Disaster Recovery Group (LDRG) met for their quarterly meeting on Thursday 5 March 2026, focusing on pre-season preparedness activities and capability updates. Neighbouring Disaster Management officers from Cherbourg, Sunshine Coast and Gympie attended, with public information and warning training following the meeting.

The LDMG and LDRG took the opportunity to ensure agency readiness based on the predicted rain forecast for the weekend. The Bureau has advised the tropical low 29U will continue with its west-southwest track towards the North Queensland coast. This system now has a reduced chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone before crossing the coast, between Cairns and Townsville.

Rain areas with locally heavy falls should extend more broadly across northern and eastern Queensland over the weekend and into early next week, potentially even reaching parts of Western Queensland, though this will be highly dependent on the future movement and development of the monsoon trough and tropical low 29U. Please continue to monitor the Bureau for further weather updates over the weekend.

These meetings strengthen relationships between agencies and ensure all supporting organisations remain connected, coordinated, and aligned.

Getting ready doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Preparation can be as easy as:

Motorists are reminded to follow the message: “If it’s flooded, forget it.” Flash flooding can strike without warning. Please rethink your travel plans, avoid flooded roads, and always drive to the conditions.

Mayor Duff said “I would like to remind the community about the importance of being prepared, this keeps our community safe and reduces the pressure on our emergency services.”

The community is encouraged to visit Council’s Emergency Management page: Emergency Management | South Burnett Regional Council for practical information and resources and don't forget to go to the Disaster Dashboard whenever you need the latest emergency information on power outages and road closures. https://dashboard.southburnett.qld.gov.au/

Preparedness is a shared responsibility—let’s stay connected, informed, and ready.
