South Burnett Regional Council is thrilled to share its achievement as one of the eight local Councils selected to receive funding in Round 8 of the Flying Fox Roost Management – Local Government Grant Program. This initiative, designed by the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) Queensland, aims to support communities in managing the impact of flying fox roosts.

The Queensland Government has invested over $2.5 million in 86 Council led projects under this program focusing on reducing the impacts of flying fox roosts and enhancing community outcomes. In this latest round, a total of $250,000 has been allocated among the successful Councils, with the South Burnett receiving a grant of $32,200.

The funding will be utilised to establish a localised subsidy program specifically designed for residents affected by the Taromeo flying fox roost in Blackbutt. Each applicant can receive a subsidy, which can be used to purchase aids that help minimise the damage caused by flying foxes.

The subsidy can be used for various expenses, including:

  • External cleaning of homes, businesses, caravans and motorhomes
  • Installation of air conditioning
  • Covers for swimming pools, vehicles and clotheslines

Residents directly impacted by the flying fox roost will be invited to apply for a subsidy. Council will provide detailed application guidelines and eligibility criteria to ensure a smooth application process.

This program exemplifies the collaborative efforts between the Queensland Government and local Councils to address community concerns effectively. Through the Flying Fox Roost Management Local Government Grant Program, these partnerships work towards resolving issues while promoting a harmonious coexistence with the native flying fox populations.

“I would like to thank the State Government and the South Burnett Regional Council for their support in providing this important funding. It is hoped these funds will assist residents directly affected by the nearby Flying Fox colony. I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with affected residents to ensure their concerns are heard and supported into the future,” said Cr Linda Little.

The aim of this funding is to alleviate the challenges faced by its residents, supporting those affected and fostering a better living environment.

For further information, residents are encouraged to contact Council on 4189 9100, email info@sbrc.qld.gov.au or visit Council’s website for updates on the application process.
