South Burnett Libraries

Queenslanders this month were invited to show their maroon spirit and celebrate what being a Queenslander means to them on Queensland Day, Wednesday 6th June. The Wondai Library had its very own interactive Queensland Day Display where patrons were invited to take pictures in the Queensland Day Photo Booth and learn about the wonderful state we live in!

National Simultaneous Storytime was once again an important annual campaign as part of Library & Information Week.  It was a colourful, vibrant and fun event that promoted the value of reading and literacy. This year children from the South Burnett visited our local libraries to share the story of “Hickory Dickory Dash” written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood.   Across the region a total of 205 children and adults took part in this event.

I am very excited to announce an extra special story time on Wednesday 4 July at 10.00am which will offer a free concert for children aged between 0-6 years.

Blue Gum Farm TV’s new live show “Koala Rumba” is a little bit quirky and a whole lot of fun! It’s a celebration of life in the Queensland bush!

Once again each library in the region will be hosting fun and interactive activities for primary school aged children during the upcoming June/July school holidays.  Information about these sessions can be found on the library website.

Shanae van den Brink will visit the library on Monday 16 July at 10.00am for a seminar on how to take proper care of your skin. This session is becoming popular so if the community is interested please book in for this event.

To celebrate NAIDOC Week 2018, next month the Kingaroy Library will be displaying the artwork of Rodney Stewart.  Rodney’s artwork is predominantly acrylic on canvas and incorporates dots and cross-hatching to create a contemporary indigenous style.  Also the Murgon Library will have a presence at a NAIDOC 2018 celebration hosted by the Murgon hospital at the QEII Park on Tuesday 17 July from 10.00-2.00pm.  The theme for this event is “Because of her, we can” and celebrates the contributions of indigenous women in our community.  The morning will include a free BBQ lunch with rhyme time and story time sessions hosted by the library staff.

Human and Social Disaster Recovery – ‘What if’ Sessions

Last month, I announced an opportunity for local organisations to get assistance in developing their business continuity plans. These plans should provide a blueprint for how a local community organisation plans and be prepares for an event that could potentially impact their service delivery for four (4) to seven (7) days. There is still time for local community organisations to find out more about how to develop their business continuity plans as Council, through State Government funding, has engaged BIEDO to assist local organisations in this space until the end of June.

South Burnett Young Professionals

Last week, I was pleased to have welcomed participants to the inaugural meet and greet of the South Burnett Young Professionals.  This newly formed networking group was well supported at the first event where over 50 people attended. There is so much potential for our local young professionals and I am excited about what this group may inspire.
