South Burnett Regional Council partners with Cloyna State School to educate the community about illegal dumping

Back

Cloyna State School has partnered with South Burnett Regional Council to educate and encourage the local community to utilise correctly and effectively the Cloyna Transfer Station.

Council’s Waste Compliance Officer visited Cloyna State School recently to discuss littering and illegal dumping, and its impact on the environment as part of the Local Government Illegal Dumping Partnerships Program (LGIDPP).

The visit was well received, with the students creating their own posters discussing disposal areas and waste segregation. These posters have been laminated and displayed at the transfer station. The students, teachers and staff of the Cloyna State School met at the Transfer Station with Cr Frohloff, Cr Duff and Council’s waste staff to erect the posters in specific spots across the site.

Waste Portfolio Holder Councillor Roz Frohloff said that it was a wonderful initiative by the students.

“By educating the community on how to correctly dispose of their waste at the transfer station and why it is important, Council can help curb illegal dumping and littering which costs rate payers a lot of money each year and creates poor living conditions in our towns.”

“It is promising to see young minds curious about our environment and learning how to take care of it, and we hope to implement more educational initiatives around this topic in the future,” said Councillor Frohloff.

Divisional Councillor Kathy Duff hopes residents using the waste transfer station will take notice of the students’ artwork and act responsibly.

“This is an important conversation to be had with people of all ages in the South Burnett to take care of our local natural environments and dispose of their waste responsibly,” said Councillor Duff.

The LGIDPP is a partnership between South Burnett Regional Council, North Burnett Regional Council and Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Councils with a mutual objective of creating cleaner, greener and more sustainable regions.

This project is proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
