Australian Aboriginal flag flies in Murgon.

South Burnett Regional Council Mayor Brett Otto is pleased to advise that last Thursday 12 November saw the Australian Aboriginal flag flying in Murgon following the installation of a new flagpole at Sir James Heading Memorial Park.

The event, timed to coincide with NAIDOC Week 2020, follows Council’s decision to fly the Australian Aboriginal flag in Kingaroy outside of the Council Chambers in May 2019.

Mayor Otto said, “South Burnett Regional Council is proud to recognise the traditional owners of the land and the indigenous population in the region. Flying the Australian Aboriginal flag symbolises Council’s respect and understanding of our heritage and the close relationship we hold with our neighbours Cherbourg Shire Council. I also acknowledge indigenous soldiers who made such incredible sacrifice for our country.”

Due to some constraints the new 9 metre pole, funded through the Australian Government’s Drought Communities Programme - Extension, was unable to be installed prior to the event. A temporary pole has been installed and will be removed and replaced with two new poles, matching the height of the two existing poles.

Once the new 9 metre poles are installed, the two existing flag poles will be repainted to match. A total of four flag poles will be presented here for future flag raising events, flying the Australian flag, Queensland flag, Australian Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait Islander flag.
