Animals allowed by property size and location

Council regulates the type and number of animals permitted on a property by prohibiting certain arrangements through Local Law 2 and Subordinate Local Law 2.

For properties which are within the Defined Town Area the following restrictions apply:

  • No more than 2 dogs and 2 cats (over the age of 3 months) on a standard allotment (unless a permit to keep an additional dog has been obtained).Go to Animal Permits page.
  • No more than 2 dogs and 2 cats (over the age of 3 months) in a multi-residential premises (unless a permit to keep an additional dog has been obtained).Go to Animal Permits page.
  • You may not keep a horse, donkey, cow, sheep, goat, alpaca, llama or deer on an allotment with an area of less than 4,000m2.
  • You may not keep a bull or stallion.
  • You may not keep a pig (including a miniature pig), ostrich or emu.
  • Only one beehive may be kept per property.
  • You may not keep a rooster (unless you are a recognised breeder and the animal can be kept without causing a noise nuisance).

For properties which are outside the Defined Town Area the following restrictions apply:

  • No more than 3 dogs or 3 cats (over the age of 3 months) on an allotment with an area of less than 20,200m2 (5 acres).
  • No more than 4 dogs and 4 cats (over the age of 3 months) on an allotment with an area between 20,200m2 and 60,700m2 (between 5 and 15 acres).
  • No more than 6 dogs and 6 cats (over the age of 3 months) on an allotment with an area of more than 60,700m2 (15 acres).

Is my property within the Defined Town Area?

The registration fee and number of animals permitted on a property depends on whether the property lies within the Defined Town Area.
