Australia Day 2012
The South Burnett Regional Council announced its 2012 Australia Day Award Winners at the region’s official awards ceremony held on the eve of Australia Day, Wednesday 25 January, at the Murgon Town Hall from 6.30pm.
The ceremony kicked off with a flag entrance ceremony conducted by the 135 Army Cadet Unit followed by the Australian National Anthem sung by local talent Gillian Voigt and then three wonderful dance routines performed by the Susan Dowdle School of Dance followed by the official opening and welcome by Mayor David Carter.The Australia Day Ambassador Mr Ross McKinnon was amongst the hundreds of people in attendance for the ceremony.Mayor David Carter heartily congratulated both winners and nominees and said he wished to strongly express his thanks to the community for supporting these awards.Honour Board for 2012 2012 Nominees
Region Secures Australia Day Ambassador
South Burnett Regional Council is delighted to announce Mr Ross McKinnon AM as its 2012 Australia Day Ambassador. Mr McKinnon will be participating in Council's regional Australia Day Awards Ceremony to be held at the Murgon Town Hall on Wednesday night, 25 January 2012.
Mr McKinnon is the Curator-in-Charge of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha, internationally regarded as amongst the world's leading sub-tropical Botanic Gardens and Brisbane's second largest tourist attraction. Mr McKinnon writes a weekly gardening column and has hosted many television and radio gardening programs over the years. He is a Patron, Life or Honorary Member of 28 horticultural organisations.
In 2005 Mr McKinnon received an Inaugural Vitae Lampada (The Burning Torch of Life) Medal for his "Consultant Role to the Queensland Poisons Information Centre to Paediatricians within the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health based at the Royal Children's Hospital and to Doctors in the broader worlds of medicine in Queensland". He also received the Order of Australia for outstanding services to horticulture on Australia Day in 1999.
South Burnett Regional Council Mayor, David Carter, encourages residents to come along and meet Mr McKinnon at the South Burnett Awards Ceremony, which starts at 6.30pm on the evening of 25th January. "It is not often that accomplished Australians of his stature visit our region and I urge our residents to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity," he said.
